Happy 2017! I hope your year is off to a great start so far. The end of the year is always a very busy time for me as a school counselor, so I have been very behind in posting on this blog, as you can see! One of my goals this year is to post on here more frequently with pictures of the work we are doing during classroom guidance. Stay tuned!

Last week, all of the students at MES signed their names on a pink heart to say that they are taking the pledge against bullying! The banner was hung in the cafeteria during the week to remind students that they are united against bullying.
The month of October is Bullying Prevention Month. For the next few weeks in guidance, I will be talking to my students about bullying, what to do if you see bullying, what to do if you are getting bullied, and much more!
I was able to make a video with my 5th grade Lion Leaders to show students what bullying looks like, and what to do if you see bullying. So far, the students have loved watching the video! October 19th is Unity Day/Stop Bullying Day. On this day, all students are encouraged to wear ORANGE to unite against bullying. More information about this day will be sent home in my next newsletter. We have kicked off guidance this year by discussing citizenship in most grades levels. Since the first pillar of character is citizenship, we will focus on this topic for a few more weeks. The kids have done such a great job of brainstorming ways to be a good, kind, helpful citizen. In fourth grade, students thought of local businesses that help those in need in our community. They put their answers on sticky notes and posted them on the board for everyone to see. Check it out below! In the younger grades, we brainstormed ways to show good citizenship. Ideas varied from helping to pick up trash, to help picking up a friend that has fallen on the ground. I am so impressed with the ideas the students came up with! Be on the lookout for more activities that promote good citizenship!
We are off to explore careers in 4th and 5th grade! All of us have learned our "smarts", better known as our multiple intelligence. With knowing our "smarts" we are able to explore careers that best match up with our interests and strengths. I used the career lesson from the School Counseling by Heart blog, and we have been learning about our smarts and career interests for a few weeks now!
You can learn more about the Career Unit by clicking here! I will start with a career unit for the lower grades once we return from spring break :) The current Pillar of Character is RESPONSIBILITY! Since we spent all of October discussing bullying and Red Ribbon Week, we are now getting into discussing what responsibility means, what we are responsible for, and how we can demonstrate responsibility at home, at school, and in the community.
Be on the lookout for worksheets your child is bringing home, as well as conversations that might pop up about responsibility! This month has been filled with so many bullying lessons and activities! On October 5th, MES wore blue to help stomp out bullying! On October 21st, we will be United Against Bullying and we will all wear orange. At lunch students will have a chance to write their name on a slip of orange paper to create a unity chain! Here are some books/activities I did with students so far...
Kindergarten: Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Bullies by Howard Binkow, One by Kathryn Otoshi 1st grade: The Juice Box Bully by Bob Samson, we created our own Bully Bugs! We also did a workbook titled Hands are Not for Hitting 2nd grade: Bully B.E.A.N.S. by Julia Cook, The Tease Monster by Julia Cook 3rd grade: Simon's Hook by Karen Gedig Burnett. We practiced how to avoid biting the hook! 4th grade: Tough!, Dare!, and Weird! by Erin Frankel. 5th grade: My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig. 5th graders also came up with skits to combat bullying. This week I wanted to work on feeling words with my Kindergarten students. I read them the book Glad Monster, Sad Monster by Ed Emberley. This book is great because of the monster face cutouts that come with the book. Each monster is given a color, so the students were able to identify certain emotions with certain colors. I then showed them the Magic Coloring Book of Feelings trick, where the pages change depending on how to scan through the book. The kids had so much fun with this book, that they kept saying "again, again!". Each student then got a monster coloring book, with all of the monsters from our story. We will continue to talk about feelings and what to do when we have feelings we don't like.
Here are some pictures of their coloring books! This week was FILLED with BUCKET FILLING! In every class I read the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. The students had a great time listening to the story, and then doing bucket filling activities!
In Pre-K through 2nd grade, the students had the opportunity to match up a picture with bucket filling or bucket dipping. Every class got each one right! In 3rd through 5th grade, the students were given scenarios and they had to decide if each one was bucket filling or bucket dipping. Each student then got a handout to color and to remind them to be bucket fillers today and everyday! |
